About Us

Our Founders

 Bill Milliken (founder.Communities In Schools) and Reid Carpenter, founder of Leadership Foundations, lead a team of volunteer business, government, and foundation veterans who coach promising nonprofits and broker strategic alliances to amplify and accelerate  positive change locally and nationally.

As two of the most recognized social entrepreneurs of modern times, Reid and Bill together represent over 100 years of boots on the ground experience in partnership building, organizational design and management, public policy, board building and governance, systems design, and in changing the way services are delivered here and in South America, Africa, India and Southeast Asia.

Supported by a small staff based near the nation's capital, LeaderComm draws on the experience and innovations of a network of over 150 local organizations.

Our History

Founded in 2014 by veteran social entrepreneurs, the LeaderComm team of board members, trustees and staff passes on lessons learned to promising nonprofit organizations and social entrepreneurs who are working to increase social mobility for people trapped in the cycle of poverty.

Seeing schools as the easiest and most central location to deliver services and empowerment tools for low income children, LeaderComm  identifies , guides and connects these tools into the ecosystem of the school, supporting neighborhood and community-wide regeneration.

Our Mission

LeaderComm was founded to help communities create integrated, collaborative public and private sector delivery systems that address the most pressing needs and generate systemic change.

Our vision is to see that communities across America will have holistic integrated service delivery systems meeting critical needs and creating a community of hope and opportunity for all.

The Three R's

Our approach is guided by three core principles -- the key to our success:

Relationships are essential to establish trust in communities;

Routers are essential to connecting people to services and service providers to each other;

Reward -- for collaboration and not competition --  is essential for funding partners

Founded on the Principles that Built Two Movements

Communities In Schools

Communities In Schools

Communities In Schools

Founded in 1977, Communities In Schools® (CIS)  is a national organization that ensures every student, regardless of race, zip code, or socioeconomic background, has what they need to realize their potential in school and beyond.

Working directly inside 3460 schools across the country, our network of 125 local CIS organizations connects students to caring adults and community resources that help them see, confront, and overcome the barriers that stand between them and a brighter future.

Communities In Schools acts as the router connecting services to students and service providers to each other.

Each year, more than 2 million young people and their families in 26 states and the District of Columbia

receive services through Communities In Schools.
